Mercedes Schlapp has no easy work in the role of White House adviser for strategic communications. It's not easy for Mercedes Schlapp to serve as the strategic communication adviser at White House. Yet, through all of it Schlapp remains focussed on the task in hand and has worked closely with the White House's political and legislative affairs departments and policy shops as well as the broader communications operation for policy-related rollouts. To date, her focus is on issues like school safety and the opioid crisis, infrastructure, trade, as well as other topics. Schlapp hasn't dealt with reporters often in her current position. The media attention she received in March came when her name appeared as one of the contenders to replace Hope Hicks. She is faced with a myriad of challenges, including as being the President's communications director, and serves as his communication director. Yet, through all of it Schlapp has stayed focussed on the task at hand, working closely with White House's political affairs and legislative affairs teams and policy shops as well as the broader communications operation in order to oversee policy implementations. To date, her focus has been issues such as school safety as well as the opioid epidemic trade, infrastructure along with other issues. Schlapp's current job doesn't involve any contact with journalists. The issue came up in March when she gained a sudden burst media attention when it became known that Schlapp would be the next candidate to replace Hope Hicks's position as director of communication. This fight was ugly. Schlapp's allies started fighting Tony Sayegh in the press. Schlapp said to that the Washington Examiner that she spoke with Sayegh regarding a recent negative article about him.
